چکیده
Abstract The notion of the Urysohn d -width measures to what extent a metric space can be approximated by -dimensional simplicial complex. We investigate how local width bounds on Riemannian manifold affect its global width. bound 1-width in terms first homology and supremal unit balls. Answering question Larry Guth, we give examples n -manifolds considerable ( n - 1 stretchy="false">) {(n-1)} which all balls have arbitrarily small 1-width. also topologically simple manifolds that are locally nearly low-dimensional.

Act Local, Think Global: Width Notions for Tractable Planning
Many of the benchmark domains in AI planning are tractable on an individual basis. In this paper, we seek a theoretical, domain-independent explanation for their tractability. We present a family of structural conditions that both imply tractability and capture some of the established benchmark domains. These structural conditions are, roughly speaking, based on measures of how many variables n...
متن کاملFrom Local to Global Consistency* from Local to Global Consistency*
In reasoning tasks involving the maintenance of consistent databases (so called "constraint net works") it is customary to enforce local consistency conditions in order to simplify the construc tion of a globally coherent model of the data. In this paper we present a relationship between the sizes of the variables' domains and the level of local consistency sufficient to ensure global con si...
متن کاملTransversal Multilinear Radon-like Transforms: Local and Global Estimates
We prove local “Lp-improving” estimates for a class of multilinear Radon-like transforms satisfying a strong transversality hypothesis. As a consequence, we obtain sharp multilinear convolution estimates for measures supported on fully transversal submanifolds of euclidean space of arbitrary dimension. We also prove global estimates for the same class of Radon-like transforms under a natural ho...
متن کاملFrom Local to Global Competition¤
We introduce a framework that has known models of oligopolistic competition with di®erentiated products (the circle, the logit, and the CES) as limit cases. This integrative approach incorporates both localized and global competition, as well as price-sensitive individual demands. It is used to explain the impact of major changes over the last two centuries: reductions in transport costs, incre...
